We sent the men off to the grocery store, anxious to see what they would come back with for this year's taste off item. We were not too shocked when the returned with almost $60 of Oreo cookies! Who knew there were SO many different types of Oreo cookies.
After our taste off we hurried back to our hotel rooms with our secret ingredient in hand and began the hours of cooking for our annual iron chef competition. We were thrilled with the secret ingredient of APPLES. How easy could that be?!? We quickly brainstormed several ideas and came up with four recipes we could hurry and make in our 2 hour window. I, of course, came up with a Cinnamon Apple Bread Pudding with a caramel topping. Diana made her famous Apple Brandy Melts which we all LOVE! Our friend Betsy then helped us with our next recipe which was my all-time favorite! These Apple Dumpling Won Tons were SO good, we all couldn't stop eating them. They are totally fattening and bad for you, but if you need a fun and new appetizer or dessert, these Won Ton's are really scrumptious!! Their crispy outside with the warm, creamy filling and the caramel drizzled all over them was aaaamazing!!!
Apple Dumpling Won Ton's
1 package won ton wrappers (square)
8 oz. cream cheese
1/3 c. brown sugar
Pinch of salt
1/2 t. cinnamon
1 apple, diced super fine (skins can be left on)
Powdered sugar for dusting
Caramel topping
Oil for frying
Cream in a bowl the cream cheese together with the brown sugar until smooth. Add the salt, cinnamon and the chopped up apple. Cream again until combined and then set aside. Pour one inch of oil into a frying pan and let the oil get to a medium-high temperature. Test the oil with a piece of a wonton wrapper and see if it bubbles. Once the oil is hot enough (not too hot or the wontons will burn), prepare the wonton wrappers. In the center of a wonton wrapper, place 2-3 t. of the cream cheese filling. Use a little bit of water on your finger to seal up the sides of the wonton and make into any shape you wish, sealing all of the sides shut. You can make triangles, round pockets (like we did), rectangles, etc. Place a few of the wontons in the oil and let them cook on both sides until the wonton is nicely golden brown. When the wonton is cooked, place them on a paper towel to drain. Continue rolling and frying the remaining wontons until the cream cheese filling is gone. To display, place the fried wontons on a plate and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Then, drizzle with the caramel topping/sauce and serve. You can serve the wontons with extra caramel sauce if you wish ;)
