Stromboli Joes

This may seem strange, but I LOVE a good, juicy sloppy joe!  I know they are not the highest quality dinner I could feed my family, but it is comfort food at it's best for us.  I love the Buffalo Joes I posted about back in the fall, but these Stromboli Joes are now my new favorite.  I love the twist of Italian seasoning and sausage.  It gives these sandwiches more of a meatball twist, rather than the traditional sloppy joe flavor.  The broiled cheese layer on the bun adds an incredible flavor & keeps the bun nice & crisp until the very last bite. Serve them with homemade french fries and fry sauce (or sweet potato fries) and you have a quick weeknight meal that will satisfy one & all!
Stromboli Joes
2 lb. lean ground beef or turkey (or 1 lb. sausage & 1 lb. beef-or any 2 lb. combination)
1 onion, diced small
In a saute pan, brown the beef with the onions until the beef is no longer red and the onions are soft. To the meat add the following:
1 c. ketchup
1 can tomato sauce
2 t. garlic powder (or use fresh garlic)
1 t. oregano
1/2 t. black pepper
1/2 t. Italian seasoning
1 t. parsley
Let the sauce simmer with the meat for a few minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Add the following:
1/4 c. Parmesan cheese, shredded
Continue to simmer until buns are ready for the meat.
8-10 hamburger buns
3-4 T. butter, melted
Garlic spread or garlic seasoning

1-1 1/2 c. shredded mozzarella cheese
Place each hamburger bun on a cookie sheet. With a pastry brush, brush the melted butter onto each of the buns. Sprinkle with the garlic seasoning and place 1-2 t. of shredded mozzarella cheese on one side of each bun. Place in the oven on broil for 20-45 seconds, or until the cheese begins to melt and they become slightly golden brown. Once they are golden, remove them from the oven and place a good helping of the meat mixture on to each set of buns. Serve warm.
